What is RSS
Often, when you visit a blog, you frequently end up seeing requests and links for you to click and ‘Subscribe’ accompanied with an orange colored icon, which is often referred to as the RSS Chicklet.
If you’ve ever wished that it would be easier for you to keep a track of the latest blog posts on any of your favorite blogs, then the RSS chicklet is your savior!
So what does RSS really stand for?
RSS
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.
They are also referred to as ‘Feeds‘.
What It Means
Essentially, this means that you can get to read the latest posts from your favorite blogs as and when they are updated.
With RSS there is no need for ‘bookmarking’ your favorite blogs in your browser.
Another alternative that most blogs provide is for you to subscribe to their blog post updates via e-mail. This means that as soon as a new blog post is updated, you get an e-mail with the contents of that blog post in your e-mail inbox.
How To RSS
In order to follow the RSS Feeds of your favorite blogs, you will need to have a RSS Reader to be able to easily manage and read all those blog feeds in one place.
Or, if you prefer to subscribe via e-mail, then you need to have an e-mail address.
Where To Find It
In order to subscribe to a blog, you will need to click on the RSS Icon, and then use a RSS Feed Reader to get all your feeds in one place.
The RSS Icon
The RSS icon is typically found in your browser’s address bar (the part where you see the big long web address).
Alternatively, you can find the RSS icon either on the top, or bottom of the page / site, or on the sidebar of the blog.
Typically, clicking on the icon will give you more options – whether you wish to subscribe via a feed reader (and options for those feed readers as well) or whether you wish to subscribe via e-mail. You can choose whichever option suits you.
A RSS Feed Reader
If you prefer to read your blog updates in a feed reader, then there are several good options available for you (and they are FREE!).
You can use Web Based Feed Readers like Google Reader, or download and use a Desktop Based Feed Reader like Net News Wire (on the Mac). Basically, you can go with what you prefer.
Why You Should Do This
There are a bunch of reasons for subscribing to blogs – whether via their RSS Feed, or via their e-mail updates. But the best reasons for subscribing to a blog are:
- Staying updated with the latest news, updates and information laden blog posts.
- Remaining current with the latest info on a variety of topics that you may be interested in – all in one place.
- Learning about all the newest offers and deals.
In Conclusion…
Reading blogs of your colleagues, peers and idols can be very illuminating and inspirational. You not only get to know the latest news and information about the new developments of your favorite people and companies. And if you are interested in a variety of topics, then you can find all these at one place, right in your feed reader!
