How To Implement Your Web Content Strategy

How To Implement Your Web Content Strategy

Having a web content strategy is very important for any business. Naturally, as is the case with any strategic endeavor, planning this web content strategy is equally important.

However, once you have your plan in place, the next logical step is implementing the web content strategy.

Today, we are going to talk about how we can go about actually implementing your web content strategy.

A web content strategy is the mainstay of any website’s success. It is the one thing that will help you define the usefulness of your website, both to you and to your users. Thus, it becomes very essential to ensure that you implement your web content strategy properly.

Web Content Strategy Implementation: Write The Content

Naturally, this is the absolute first step of your web content strategy implementation process. Once you know the following, the next step becomes easier:Writing on my Computer

  • What is your blog’s / website’s focus?
  • Who is your target audience?
  • What is the frequency of information disbursement in your industry?
  • What is the preferred method of information disbursement in your industry?
  • What is your editorial strategy?
  • What is your SEO strategy?
  • What are the gaps between your existing content and the desired content?
  • Who are the key people involved in the content creation and disbursement processes?
  • What are the different tools that you are going to use to create and disburse your content?

With this information at hand, start writing the content you want to have on your website / blog.

All these points will serve as a great framework that will guide you as you go along, and help you create content that is relevant, informative, fresh, and share-worthy.

Web Content Strategy Implementation: Schedule, But Stay Flexible

schedulingAnother very important rule to follow, in any industry vertical, is to schedule your content updates in advance while retaining a certain amount of flexibility. For example, in WordPress, you can use a very beautiful plugin called the Editorial Calendar to schedule the date and time when your blog post ‘goes live’.

However, if something really new and headline-worthy comes along, then your scheduled content updates should be such that they can be moved around and juggled, so as to accommodate the latest news updates.

The reason I like this plugin is because it gives me the ability to easily leverage the ‘schedule a post publication’ feature that is built into WordPress and include such spur-of-the-moment posts or latest news updates.

Web Content Strategy Implementation: Comment, Community, Share and Promote

Naturally, this is the best way to get your stuff out there. Just by writing your blog post and making sure your SEO keywords are in it is not always sufficient. It is also important to promote your blog post / website in the different places where your potential and current clients might find it.

The best way to do so is:Sharing Information Online

  • Comment: Find other websites / blogs that talk about stuff similar to yours and post relevant and informative comments on their blog posts. This will often help get others’ attention to your website. Plus, if you’ve commented on their blog a few times, they might even come back and comment on yours.
  • Community: This whole process creates a sense of community and involvement amongst the people who write and read these blogs.
  • Share: This then results in the ‘sharing’ of your content across other social media websites like FaceBook and Twitter.
  • Promote: And then, other people who are the FaceBook friends or Twitter followers of such content sharers discover your content, thus generating a new wave of visitors and commenters on your blog.

Of course, this cycle is a continuous process – like a gift that keeps on giving – and you can be a part of every step for both your blog and for others’ blogs.

Web Content Strategy Implementation: Rinse and Repeat

And of course, you must do this all over again after a certain point of time!rinse repeat

Every strategy needs a bit of periodic revision – and so does your web content strategy. Revise the strategy, say every year, to ensure that you stay current and are on top of the latest trends. This is important.

Revision also helps you understand what worked and what did not work, and why. Knowing this can help you correct your mistakes and ensure that you don’t repeat them again.

As such, it is a lifelong learning experience, and you will be happier because of the benefits that you gain from it.

Web Content Strategy Implementation: Keep At It

repeat-keep-at-itAlthough the above-mentioned steps might look easy, they are a lot of work. Especially if you are a one-(wo)man show a.k.a. freelancer (like me), then things can get pretty tangled up. However, I have found that it helps if you plan these steps and schedule time in your calendar in advance. For example, I might opt to spend just one hour a day doing some or the other part of this process. That’s it. But these small steps go a long way.

It is very important to keep at it, and not give up the process – because the time you spend in this is going to give you rewards down the road.

In Conclusion…

While it is important to have a web content strategy in place, and to plan it properly, the implementation process is equally important. When your plans are put into practice, you are the first person to gain from their success.
